GREENLAND ROLLING

Do you want to learn to roll? Come to Switzerland's No. 1

We have been teaching Greenland rolls for many years now – much longer than the Salty Cosmos has existed. We never counted it, but we have certainly taught well over a hundred paddlers how to roll successfully (and, above all, with great fun!). Quite a few of them came to us from other courses or club trainings frustrated, with dented self-confidence and sometimes even injuries, and were convinced that they would never learn it. We have helped practically all of them to success. Many of them have come to us again and again since then – not because they still can't do it, but because they have got a taste for it and are now learning the most difficult rolls with great enthusiasm in our advanced courses.

Salty Cosmos is undoubtedly the leading name in Switzerland when it comes to Greenland rolling. We haven't just been pioneers in our country for years; we've also gained international experience, taught at several symposiums, and worked with some of the world's leading figures in the sport, including Cheri Perry, James Manke, Eiichi Ito, and our long-time friend, partner, and mentor, Manolo Pastoriza. In 2024 and 2025, we conducted courses for the renowned Pagaia Kayak Club in Catalonia and the Jersey Canoe Club, and we've been invited to Istanbul and Malta for 2026.

An Achievement of the Inuit:
Alive and evolving

So much more than just "the roll"

Greenland rolling is much more than just "capsize training" or crude "Eskimo rolling". Rather, it is an entire discipline in paddling, with dozens of different rolls and exercises in which you not only learn how to roll up after a capsize, but also gain incredible coordination, flexibility, core power and a fair amount of boat control in all imaginable situations.

At the same time, every Greenland roll is a journey to the roots of our sport, which are arguably more alive today than ever before – not only in Greenland, but all over the world. Let us honour these roots together and help to ensure that the legacy of the brave and inventive Arctic hunters is preserved and developed!

Courses for beginners:
Here you lay a clean foundation

At this level, you will learn the Greenland Standard Roll and develop a really clean technique right from the start. This is not only the prerequisite for your first successful roll, but also the foundation on which many other rolls are built and the guarantee for reliable, injury-free and elegant rolling.
Basic Course Greenland Standard Roll
Weekend course for beginners and returners

Intermediate courses:
Refine what you know and learn new ways

Now it gets really exciting: In our advanced courses you will learn new and more difficult rolls from the Greenland Standard family. With each of these new rolls you will refine your technique and become more confident. It is also time to learn rolls that end over the front deck. Once you have mastered the reverse sweep and the storm roll, you can roll back and forth in all directions and gain an incredible amount of confidence, speed and intuition. And we are sure: By now you will have caught the Greenland virus and will want to learn more and more rolls!
Reverse Sweep Roll
Learn to roll from back to front
One of the most beautiful rolls ever is the reverse sweep roll! And it's not only beautiful, but also extremely practical, because if you master it, you'll never have to go back to the setup after a failed standard roll. Because with this roll everything happens really quickly, and all exactly the other way around as the Greenland standard roll.

Storm Roll
The mother of all forward rolls!
Everyone wants to be able to do it: The Storm Roll! Alongside the Greenland Standard Roll, this very aesthetic roll is, for most people, the epitome of all Greenlandic rolls. And it is the key to the rather difficult forward Norsaq and hand rolls.

Advanced Courses:
Hand Rolls and Other Challenges

Have you mastered the basic Greenland Standard, Reverse Sweep and Storm Roll? Have you attended the Greenland Standard intermediate course, and Butterfly, Balance Brace & Co. are all no major difficulties for you? Then it's time to face new challenges. Put the paddle under the deck lines and start the Norsaq and hand rolls! Or learn the difficult sculling rolls!
Advanced Course Weekend
Hand rolls backwards and forwards, sculling and beyond!
Can you already do the three basic rolls: Greenland Standard, Reverse Sweep, and Storm Roll? Are you also comfortable with Butterfly, Balance Brace, and some of the other rolls from the introductory course?

This weekend, we'll build on all of that and tackle the more challenging rolls using a harpoon stick (norsaq) and your bare hand—or perhaps even your elbow, etc. We'll combine and invent new drills and sequences until everything becomes truly intuitive and effortless. And of course, we'll also look at sculling rolls. Ultimately, though, you decide what you want to work on. Because this weekend, we'll work completely individually.

Dates

29th / 30th August Lake Thun, Gwatt

Advanced Greenland Tapas Weekend
A Greenland Tapas weekend with a focus on sculling for the advanced
As in our first Greenland Tapas course, this course includes a colorful mix of Greenland paddling techniques, exercises and rolls – but this time at an advanced level. Prepare to be surprised! But we'll tell you one thing in advance: this weekend will focus on everything to do with sculling. And that of course includes various sculling rolls. But since sculling training is pretty strenuous, we'll also do other exciting and challenging Greenland-related things in between, in true Greenland Tapas style.

This is what Silvy Seal says

Rolling around in the water is the most beautiful thing in the world! (Aside from catching fish, of course...) Well, but of course I have it a little easier than humans: I don't need a weird nose clip or a wooden pole. And with my big flippers and my flexible body, I can roll and turn underwater at lightning speed in all kinds of ways. Better than on land, to be honest.

With you land mammals it seems to be exactly the opposite. Considering that you have such small flippers and, let's be honest, can't last underwater for very long, it's quite amazing what you can do in your kayaks. Really! I'm definitely looking forward to watching you this summer, even though I've heard that the water you'll be practicing in is terribly unsalted.
