FORWARD FINISHING ROLLS WEEKEND

Weekend Course, Intermediate Level

22./23.08.2026

Forward Finishing Rolls Weekend

A weekend course for anyone who wants to learn to roll forward. Intermediate

Category: Forward Finishing

Dates:
22./23. August, Lake Uri, Brunnen

Cost: 500 CHF

Now it's finally time to delve into the world of Greenlandic forward rolls. Learning the reverse sweep and storm roll is the ticket. These two rolls form the basis for a variety of other rolls in the forward finishing category, all of which end above the foredeck, face and palms down (low brace position). The same applies here as with the rolls from the Greenland Standard family: There are almost no upper limits – but the foundation has to be right. Hip bend, footwork and forward mobility are the keys. That's why we'll train that a lot this weekend!

Intermediate Course. This means: For this course you should ideally already have a somewhat functioning roll.

Otherwise, the usual applies: swimming skills and basic knowledge of sea kayaking – especially how to use the spray deck above and below water.

Course content
We start the weekend with chest sculling and the reverse sweep roll. A beautiful roll that is basically the reverse of a Greenland Standard Roll: We capsize backwards and the upper body makes a long journey across the aft deck until it comes up again next to the boat in a deep low brace and then over the front deck.

On Sunday we'll tackle the Storm Roll – probably the most famous Greenlandic roll alongside the Greenland Standard. It is also a wonderfully aesthetic role that works almost magically if you manage to keep your upper body tightly above the foredeck and not undercut the paddle.
Time schedule
We meet on the first day of the course at 9:30 at the course location specified below (see “Course locations and meeting points”).

First we introduce each other and talk about our goals for this weekend. We distribute any ordered equipment and kayaks and change clothes. Afterwards there is an extensive round of stretching and warming up before we go on the water for the first exercises.

We take a lunch break at around 13:00

After that we continue training.

The course ends at 16:30

Bring along

Large towel and/or yoga mat
Warm paddling clothing: neoprene, fleece, paddling jacket or drysuit plus thermal underwear
Buoyancy aid*
Paddle and kayak (can be rented)
swimwear
Nose clip
Important: earplugs (!) and/or neoprene hood
Diving or swimming goggles (optional)
Lunch and drinks

* Most of our rolling courses, but especially all beginner courses, take place in shallow water, which is why we usually do not wear a buoyancy aid if possible. This makes the movement a little easier. But it is also possible that we want or need to paddle a bit in between, which is why it is important that you have a buoyancy aid with you.

Renting kayak and equipment
It is possible to rent a kayak and/or drysuit from us for the duration of the course.

Prices:
Single day: 60 CHF
Weekend: 100 CHF
Three days: 120 CHF

These prices are for one kayak or drysuit each. If you rent both, you have to pay for both.

You can rent a Greenland paddle, wetsuit, neoprene shoes, paddling jacket and buoyancy aid from us free of charge if you order in advance. All participants will receive a link to our online material order form in good time before the course begins.
Attention when planning a change of waters: Stop Quagga!
The invasive and rapidly spreading quagga mussel threatens our lakes and infrastructure. This problem also affects us paddlers. Therefore, EVERY time you change waters, clean and dry your kayak and your equipment!

  • Remove visible plant material such as mud and residual water from the source water.
  • Then clean your kayak thoroughly with fresh water. Ideally with a high-pressure cleaner and water with a temperature of over 45 degrees. Make sure that the dirty water does not get into other waters.
  • Then dry your equipment and your kayak for at least four days.

More information on this topic can be found in this ETH Science Talk, for example
Say it in Greenlandic
These are the names of this weekend's rolls in Greenlandic:

  • Siukkut pallortillugu masikkut (Storm Roll)
  • Kingumut naatillugu (Reverse Sweep Roll)
