Storm Roll

Single Day Course for those who want to master the beautiful storm roll

Category: Forward Finishing

Dates:
30th May, Murtensee, Salavaux Plage
1st August, Lac de Gruyère, Gumefens

Cost: 300 CHF
In the four-day Season Start Package 29 May – 1 June: 880 CHF
In the three-day package together with Hand Rolling Weekend 1 – 3 August: 750
CHF

Basically, this one-day course, which takes place twice in 2025, is all about one thing: the storm roll - the beautiful, efficient, low-tuck, forward low-brace roll of the Greenlanders. That would almost say it all. But only almost, because this year you have the opportunity to learn the storm roll with us in different contexts:

1.: On May 30th, one day after Ascension Day, as part of our four-day start-of-season course package. This package is aimed at everyone who can already roll (e.g. Greenland Standard) and now wants to immerse themselves in the world of forward rolls, or who wants to repeat these courses again to start the warm rolling season and build on them this summer. The Storm Roll Day is included in this course package together with the Reverse Sweep Roll (Ascension Day, May 29th) and our new Greenland Tapas course (May 31st and June 1st), where we offer you a rich "tapas buffet" consisting of Greenland paddling technique bites, some rolls and a bit of sculling. This course package is therefore aimed particularly at all people at intermediate level who are looking for an intensive start to the season with lots of new input.

2.: On August 1st, as a prelude to our three-day "August 1st course package". The idea here is that we offer the Storm Roll Day in particular as preparation for the difficult forward hand rolls on day 3. This course is therefore primarily aimed at more advanced rollers who want to go back to the Storm Roll before taking a big step further, moving on to the hand rolls. What's special about this day is that you can also switch back and forth between the Storm Roll course and the Skills Booster Course Greenland Standard, which takes place at the same time at the same location. This makes sense depending on your focus and your goals, because on the following two days, both aft finishing (Greenland Standard) and front-ending Norsaq and hand rolls will be taught. You decide what's your emphasis and where you need more training in advance.

3.: Last but not least, there is also our classic Forward Finishing Rolls Weekend on July 5th and 6th in Chevroux on Lake Neuchâtel, where you will learn the Storm Roll together with the Reverse Sweep Roll in a weekend course.
Skill level and participation requirements

This is an intermediate rolling course. This means you should already have a somewhat working roll in your repertoire. Ideally, this is the Greenland Standard Roll.

Otherwise, the usual applies: swimming skills and basic knowledge of sea kayaking – especially how to use the spray deck above and below water.

Course content
As described above – today we learn the storm roll or refine it and build on it. As always, we first take a close look at the movement sequences on dry land. We then practice in the water, first with an extended paddle, then with a normal grip in the middle of the paddle. Rolling with the shorter storm paddle, which is always held extended, is also worth a try!

And for everyone who can do this really well already, we look individually at what the next steps could be: Do both sides work equally well? Does it work with crossed hands? Are we perfecting the leg work, which always makes sense considering the days ahead?
Time schedule
We will meet at 9:30 at the course location specified below (see “Course location and meeting point”).

First we introduce each other and talk about our goals for the day. We distribute any ordered equipment and kayaks and change clothes. Afterwards there is an extensive round of stretching and warming up before we go ashore for the first exercises.

We take a lunch break at around 13:00.

After that we continue training.

Course ends at 16:30.

Murtensee, Salavaux-Plage
Camping Salavaux-Plage

We meet at 9:30 on the beach at the campsite.
If you are also staying overnight at the campsite, we recommend checking in the evening before.

Tagesgästen dürfen natürlich auch auf den Camping, müssen ihr Fahrzeug aber etwas abseits abstellen. Es gibt Parkplätze in der Nähe am See (z.B. Bring along

Large towel and/or yoga mat
Warm paddling clothing: neoprene, fleece, paddling jacket or drysuit plus thermal underwear
Buoyancy aid*
Paddle and kayak (can be rented)
swimwear
Nose clip
Important: earplugs (!) and/or neoprene hood
Diving or swimming goggles (optional)
Lunch and drinks

* Most of our rolling courses, but especially all beginner courses, take place in shallow water, which is why we usually do not wear a buoyancy aid if possible. This makes the movement a little easier. But it is also possible that we want or need to paddle a bit in between, which is why it is important that you have a buoyancy aid with you.

Renting kayak and equipment
It is possible to rent a kayak and/or drysuit from us for the duration of the course.

Prices:
Single day: 60 CHF
Weekend: 100 CHF
Three days: 120 CHF

These prices are for one kayak or drysuit each. If you rent both, you have to pay for both.

You can rent a Greenland paddle, wetsuit, neoprene shoes, paddling jacket and buoyancy aid from us free of charge if you order in advance. All participants will receive a link to our online material order form in good time before the course begins.
Attention when planning a change of waters: Stop Quagga!
The invasive and rapidly spreading quagga mussel threatens our lakes and infrastructure. This problem also affects us paddlers. Therefore, EVERY time you change waters, clean and dry your kayak and your equipment!

  • Remove visible plant material such as mud and residual water from the source water.
  • Then clean your kayak thoroughly with fresh water. Ideally with a high-pressure cleaner and water with a temperature of over 45 degrees. Make sure that the dirty water does not get into other waters.
  • Then dry your equipment and your kayak for at least four days.
