COURSE WEEK ROSES

This course on the rather dry and barren but gorgeous and unspoiled rocky coast of northern Catalonia, just behind the French-Spanish border, is perfect for all those who can already paddle safely on the lake and now want to take the step out to sea. The area is perfect for opening up this new, salty paddling world to you: sandy and pebble beaches, rocky sections, rugged capes, hidden bays and exciting play spots form a varied coastline that is protected on most days from the prevailing north- or northwesterly winds. Here we can optimally devote ourselves to everything you need without having to spend a lot of time on shuttles, because most days we just have to carry the kayaks over to the beach and we're right in the middle of our paddling paradise.

This is a real all-round course, covering a broad variety of topics: In addition to "conventional" touring paddling on the sea, it also covers the more technical aspects of sea kayaking, especially rock hopping and exciting paddling close to the rocks. Of course, new steering strokes and maneuvers have to be learned and practiced before doing this. That's why we dedicate ourselves intensively every day to refining your paddling technique – which is about a lot more than just paddling straight. We also deal in detail with essential topics such as planning, weather, navigation, rescue and safety.

DETAILS

Programme Day 1
We start our course on Sunday morning stress-free with a welcome session, in which we will also discuss and document all your personal goals for the week. Ultimately, we want to ensure that all participants benefit optimally from this course! In order for you to be able to take part in the first course day well-rested and fit, we recommend that you arrive the day before, if possible (see also below: “Meeting point, arrival, shuttles”). We will then distribute the equipment you ordered and make sure everything fits well. When all of this is done and everyone is happy with their gear, we head to the beach and onto the water – of course not without a safety briefing.
On the water, the first thing we will do is get a practical overview of where everyone stands technically. In any case, we are planning to have a session on basic paddling techniques and rescue exercises in flat conditions. Even though for most participants this will probably be a repetition of what they have already practiced, we are convinced that this is by no means “wasted time”. On the contrary: If everyone is more or less on the same level and "speaks the same language", this is the best basis for the coming course days.

Maybe there will be a little trip around the corner today. But we don't promise that, because the goal for this training day is ultimately a different one. In the evening, after practice, we will have a first planning session: We want to plan the next day with you directly and realistically, based on the wind, weather and shipping forecast. We believe this is an excellent exercise because this course is ultimately about you becoming independent sea kayakers who can travel safely on the sea by yourselves.
Programme Days 2–5
From now on we will put together the detailed program for the week on site, evening for evening, based on the wind and weather forecasts. The aim is a perfect mix of paddle technique training, touring and technical, playful paddling in the waves, rock hopping – a bit of everything. The most important thing is to build up your self-confidence in slightly wavier conditions than you are used to on the lake. That's why we will of course also include rescue exercises.

It is equally important to have enough time for the topics of weather, navigation and trip planning (excluding tidal areas). If you want to be safe on the sea, you have to master these basics as well as all the techniques that we will learn while paddling on the sea during this week.
Programme Day 6
On our last day of paddling we will make sure we get off the water by 16:00 at the latest and end the course with a feedback session. You have enough time to take care of your equipment or preparing for your departure. We recommend planning this for Friday evening at the earliest, or even better Saturday.

If you have borrowed gear from us, we ask that you rinse everything with fresh water and return it to us clean and salt-free by Friday evening.

TYPICAL CONDITIONS

This is what you may hope for

Weather
At this time of year the water on the Costa Brava is still cool, but it is definitely spring and usually pleasantly warm.

Wind
The main wind direction in this area is northwest and unfortunately that sometimes means Tramuntana – the Catalan sister of the infamous Mistral. However, around our base on the rocky south coast of the cape we are quite well protected from winds from northern directions. The north coast or the Bay of Portlligat offer us protection from southerly winds.

Waves
When there is a northerly wind, the sea is calm on the south coast. In southerly winds however, conditions pick up in our bay. Then the waves can build up quite steeply. But don't worry: if the predicted conditions are likely to be too difficult, we can usually find calmer seas on the nearby north coast of the Cape. Our peninsula offers us either protection or waves in almost all weather conditions, depending on what it is we are looking for. Therefore, there are rarely days here when we are stuck on land.

Paddle Technique: Lifelong Learning on Every Level

The pursuit of good paddling technique runs like a common thread through the lives of all good paddlers. Only those who never stop being curious and open to learning and practicing, develop further. It doesn’t matter at what point in the journey you are. At Salty Cosmos there is no pressure to perform, no comparisons and no competitive mentality. At the most, we want to encourage you to try things and awaken the curiosity and fire inside of you. This is how learning works for us.

Learning paddling technique doesn't just mean learning to go straight – although a really efficient forward paddling technique is actually something that you have to develop over a long time. Equally important and exciting are control strokes, applied stroke combinations, edging, supporting, sculling and rolling. Everything that helps you have optimal control of your kayak in all situations.

By the way, at Salty Cosmos we are big fans of the Greenland paddle. But that doesn't mean at all that you as a "Euro-paddler" wouldn't be equally welcome with us and couldn't benefit. At least we are sure that we can give you a different perspective and new inputs that come from our world of experience: new tools in your personal "toolbox". Our own paddling style is not “traditional” Greenlandic, but rather uses a variety of elements from all types of kayaking. We are not fans of rigid dogmas and do not believe in “pure doctrine” or the “one truth”. Rather, we are convinced that there is still an infinite amount out there to discover, learn and develop – not least for ourselves. And if we can share some of it with you and you find it useful, then that makes us happy.

Discover Europe's Most Beautiful Coastlines With Us

There are paddlers for whom sea kayaking primarily means making distance. Often these people paddle purposefully in a straight line past the most beautiful coasts – and overlook all the small and large things that there are to discover. So many beautiful things, so many incredible things, so many spontaneous adventures – if you take the time for them. That's exactly what we mean by "exploring the coast": taking advantage of every opportunity for experiences and fascinating discoveries. The lines between “touring” and “play” blur depending on what presents itself to us. Depending on the tide, swell, wind and weather, a coastline is always different.

We don't measure the success of a paddle-day in kilometers, but in the number of "Wows"! And believe us: there are a lot of them where we go sea kayaking with you.

Fantastic Day Trips

Touring doesn't always mean that you have to paddle for several days with a lot of luggage: Exciting day trips let you enjoy the juicy bits of a coast and you're back at the base camp in the evening. And at the same time, a "day trip" doesn't always have to be synonymous with touring: Just as often as we undertake an excursion-style day trip, we go on paddle-strolls "just around the corner" to a particularly cool rock garden, a tide race or Surf beach and see what happens there. This way, without paddling many kilometers, we also make great, fulfilling and exciting days of sea kayaking.

Rockhopping: Big Fun, Also in Smaller Waves

Next to surfing, rock hopping is certainly the most playful activity in the vast cosmos of sea kayaking. Paddling with the waves at exactly the right moment over a washed-over granite rock, through narrow passages and into bubbling rock features – always in the rhythm of the waves – that's rock hopping. It takes timing, skill, good observation skills, confident control strokes and a bit of boat control, which fortunately grows with each session.

Rock hopping is an activity that quickly becomes addictive and is a lot of fun. There is no need for big waves. On the contrary: the best rock hopping sessions take place in generally rather calm conditions. Even small waves can create turbulence, suction and very dynamic conditions between the rocks. You have to accept scratches and dents in your kayak before involving in this activity, otherwise it definitely won't be fun. Even a small hole in the boat can happen from time to time, which is why we always have repair materials with us. And to ensure that no injuries occur, we always exercise caution. A good rule for rock hopping is: never play where you don't want to swim.

Dynamic Water: Widen Your Comfort Zone

Paddling in dynamic water – whether generated by wind, tide or swell – provides variety and excitement. And it makes you a better paddler.

It is part of our course structure to accompany you step by step from the calm lake to increasingly challenging conditions. What is “challenging” on this journey and what is specifically understood as “dynamic water” – that is highly subjective and is ultimately determined by you, your skills and, above all, your comfort zone, which we will try to carefully expand together. That's why we work with you to find conditions that challenge you without overwhelming you or generating bad experiences. Because we want you to have new experiences, become a safer paddler and walk away from the water with a good feeling and a big grin after each day with us.

Navigation: There is Simply no Way Around it

Sea kayaking is not just a sport, but a complex activity in nature. That's why you also need knowledge of navigation, among other things. If you only paddle within sight of shores with a clear and easily recognisable shoreline, remembering where you parked your car is probably enough. Things get a lot more complex though in areas like the archipelagoes of Sweden or Finland, where you travel between hundreds of very similar-looking islands. If you don't know how to use a map and compass while paddling here, it won't take long for you to get hopelessly lost. Tours in areas with tidal currents are even worse: If here you are not fully on top of the matter and can calculate and paddle a course precisely, you'll probably not reach your destination but end up somewhere far out at sea. A very unpleasant situation at best…

Navigation is a fundamentally important and exciting topic that we take great pleasure in teaching in our courses. And it is absolutely part of safe sea kayaking.

Seriously Fun Stuff…

Land on a cliff just to make espresso... Open your spraydeck and go for a swim in a bubbling gully… Get up in your kayak and do some "stand up paddling"… Go backwards through the tide race... Surf without a paddle... Or what about a rodeo with a person on the back deck? Or would you rather try a roll with a “koala” on your bow? Why? Just because you can do it. And because it's fun. There are a thousand ways to have fun and learn in sea kayaking (and a million more that we haven't invented yet)! At least for everyone who doesn't take themselves too seriously and who hasn't stopped being curious.

Planning: Essential for a Sea Kayak Trip on Your Own

The foundation for a successful sea kayak trip is robust planning. And unfortunately, a lack of (or incorrect) planning is usually the first step down the road towards what eventually evolves into a mayday. It's that simple.

Here you will learn all the basics to prepare for a completely successful, safe and, in the most positive sense, unforgettable sea kayak trip: weather, sea state, safety, emergency planning, required (and useful) equipment, communication, navigation.
Stacks Image 8

Safety & Rescue: Absolutely Essential for All of Us

If you really want to be safe on the sea in a kayak, you have to practice rescues regularly. By the way, this also applies to paddlers who go on guided tours! The stronger and safer a group, the more your guide can do with you. And the feeling is even better.

That's why our courses include rescue training: from simple and common to difficult and complex. We always practice first in calm water, but eventually in places that are a little more realistic and challenging.

In addition to training on the water, other things are also very important to us in this context: Above all, essential knowledge about topics such as radio, signaling devices and emergency equipment, first aid, sea survival and hypothermia.

SAFETY PARAMETERS

This is what you can rely on

The sea does what it does. With our safety parameters we determine the maximum environmental conditions up to which we will go on the water* during this programme:
Wind
Offshore wind:
  • Up to 15 knots (wind force 4) in areas with predominantly steep banks that offer enough protection
  • Up to 10 knots (wind force 3) in areas with predominantly flat shorelines that offer insufficient protection

Onshore wind:
  • Up to 10 knots (wind force 3) in areas with predominantly steep, rocky shores
  • Up to 15 knots (wind force 4) in areas with flat, sandy shores with easy landing options
Waves
  • Swell of up to 0.5m and maximum 12 sec. period in areas with predominantly rocky shores
  • Swell of up to 1m and a maximum of 12 sec. period in areas with predominantly sandy, flat shores that provide safe landing
The sea weather report or swell forecast serves as the basis for assessment. In the case of short, steep wind waves, cross seas, etc., the situation is assessed individually.
If it is not possible to find these (or easier) conditions in our paddling area, we will stay on land. Other safety parameters (extreme gusts, rapidly falling air pressure, thunderstorms, etc.) also apply.

EVERYTHING ELSE

This is what you need to organise by yourself

For all of our programs, arrival and departure as well as all transport and on-site accommodation are the responsibility of the participants. This means that you have to take care of these things yourself. Below you will find all the information you need:
Meeting point & arrival
GETTING THERE

Meeting point:
Camping Ampurdanes
Carrer Rembrandt, 8
17480 Roses, Girona
España
Website: https://campingampurdanes.es

Time:
For a quieter and relaxed start to the course, we recommend arriving the day before (Saturday, April 19th). When exactly you arrive is completely your choice. Please prepare to be self-sufficient on the day of arrival and note that your Salty Cosmos team is also busy preparing and will not be available before the course begins.

The course starts on Sunday morning (April 20th) at 10:00.

Getting there:
The campsite at the far eastern end of Roses is very easy to reach by car (e.g. from Bern in just about 9 hours). When making travel arrangements, please don't forget to ask the other participants whether they are looking for or offering a ride.

Public transport is relatively uncomplicated up to the central Roses bus station. However, from there we recommend taking a taxi.

We can particularly recommend traveling by TGV. There is a direct connection between Lyon Part Dieu and Figueres Vilafant without changing trains. Public transport between Figueres and Roses is also relatively straightforward to the Roses central bus station. However, we recommend a taxi from there at the latest.

For anyone who lives a little further away and wants or needs to fly, we recommend Girona, which is much closer, as a destination in addition to the large airport of Barcelona (e.g. very cheap with Ryanair from Karlsruhe, Memmingen or Düsseldorf non-stop). Cheap flights to Barcelona are mainly available from Vueling or EasyJet.
Accommodation
During this course week, we will be staying on the quiet and very nice campsite Ampurdanes in Roses, which is practically located directly by the sea. In addition to plenty of spaces for tents and mobile homes or caravans, Ampurdanes also offers bungalows for rent.

If you don't want to stay at the campsite, you can of course also look for an alternative nearby (holiday apartment, AirBnB, hotel, etc.). However, it is important that you are able to get to the agreed meeting point on time, independently and without any problems.
Please remember that either way you are responsible for organising, booking and paying your accommodation.
Rations
In all Salty Cosmos programmes, food and drinks are generally the responsibility of the participants. Please consider whether you would like to cook for yourself or eat in a privately organised communal group.
Insurance
Accident insurance, travel health insurance, rescue and recovery insurance
In all Salty Cosmos programs, accident insurance, travel health insurance and rescue and recovery insurance are the responsibility of the participants. Please take care of these things early.

Cancellation cost insurance
Please take out cancellation insurance when you complete your booking. If you were to become sick ahead of the programme, it would be a pity if you were not only missing out, but also losing money.

This is what Silvy Seal says

This will be a really cool course with a lot to learn. I love learning new things, so of course I'm right in the middle of it all – even though I'm anything but new to the sea!!

What I find really exciting here is playing underneath the cliffs and between the rocks. This is really a total highlight, because if you pay attention here, you'll learn an incredible amount, not just steering strokes, edging your boat and things like that, but also how my world works: I think a lot of people will take a real leap with this course and get a taste for paddling on the sea.
