Manolo Pastoriza

Manolo Pastoriza, born in Galicia, Spain, into a family of sailors, has always been in contact with the sea since early childhood. He started paddling at the age of 12. This has led to more than 30 years of experience as a coach in various kayak disciplines, during which he has trained paddlers of all levels. In addition to rolling and paddling in the Greenlandic style, his passion is making custom-made traditional paddles.

David Tetzschner

Waterman David Tetzschner from Copenhagen learned to roll in Greenland in 1997 and soon began teaching this art to other paddlers - on a professional basis since 2006.

Since then, the eight-time Danish champion has been coaching Greenland rolling at symposiums in Denmark and the Netherlands, where he has worked as an instructor more than ten times. For David, being headfirst in the water is a natural part of kayaking. He describes Greenland rolling as a journey to perfection, where you develop the ability to right your boat in a variety of ways in all conditions.

In addition to rolling, David has won the Danish Kayak Surfing Championships more than ten times in a surf kayak and twice in a sea kayak. He has also been whitewater kayaking for many years, including in Norway, Sweden, France and Malaysia. When he is not kayaking or coaching, he works as a physiotherapist and, since 1998, as a professional surf lifeguard on the beach in Denmark.

Eiichi Ito

Eiichi Ito from Japan is known all over the world. In 1998, the "master of the storm roll" held a Greenland paddle in his hand for the first time. He soon founded the Japanese Greenland Kayak Association QajaqJPN, which became a branch of the Greenland Association Qaannat Kattuffiat. Today he runs a popular YouTube channel, the website Storm On and the "Storm Shelter" center, where he offers not only rolling but also Greenland kayak building courses. Since 2011 he has been teaching at symposiums and events around the world, including in the USA, Argentina, Spain, Greece, Russia, Singapore and Canada. Since 2024 he has been touring the world with James Manke as "Stay Salty".

Eiichi is looking forward to visiting Switzerland for the first time. He says of himself that he is getting "quite old" - but that we all have the skills needed to enjoy kayaking Greenland style, regardless of age. And that's exactly what he wants to share with us.

James Manke

For over 15 years, James has travelled the globe sharing his expertise in kayak rolling, surfing, and rough-water paddle skills. A passionate paddler and member of The Hurricane Riders, James thrives in the excitement of rough water. As a former International Kayak Rolling Champion, he brings unmatched skill and dedication to his teaching, helping paddlers transform fear and anxiety into confidence and empowerment.

Primarily a Greenland-style paddler, James embraces challenges—once tackling the Grand Canyon in a sea kayak with a traditional Greenland paddle. Whether teaching advanced rolling techniques or inspiring others to explore their limits, James’s love for the water is infectious.

Yuri Endres

You probably already know Yuri too. Together with Ella, he is responsible for taking care of the Salty Cosmos. When he is not in a kayak himself, he is usually in the water with Ella, teaching people how to Greenland roll. And that is exactly what will happen at our symposium, too.

September 21st: Greenland Rolling Competition

As serious as you want it to be: Whether you're set to win the first championship title or showing your first roll, participation is what counts. Together we'll show the world that we're a great community that does a really cool sport and supports each other.

Participation in the first Swiss Greenland Rolling Championship is voluntary and open to all participants of the symposium. The competition rules of the Greenland Kayak Association Qaannat Kattuffiat apply, albeit with certain adaptations. The most important of these adaptations is that you can choose which rolls you want to show (and which you don't) the evening before the competition. The jury will then only call out these rolls. There are two categories: beginners (up to 5 rolls) and advanced (more than 5 rolls).

Rolling, Camping, Celebrating and Enjoying: All Information

In the following sections you will find all the information you need to plan your participation at the first Swiss Greenland Rolling Symposium. If you have any further questions, please contact us.
Venue & Accommodation
We will stay at the Murg campsite, right on Lake Walen, where the entire symposium will take place:

Camping Murg
Strandbodenstrasse 16
CH-8877 Murg

If possible, we recommend arriving the evening before (Thursday 18 September). We have reserved the entire campsite from Thursday evening for the duration of the symposium, which is why you do not need to make a separate reservation with the campsite in advance. However, the overnight stay is not included in the price and you must register at reception upon arrival and pay for your stay at the campsite yourself at the end. The normal campsite rates apply.

Infrastructure:
At the very beautiful 3* campsite you can expect: Modern and well-maintained showers, toilets, free WiFi, electricity (see also info below), dish and clothes sinks, a washing machine and dryer (fees apply) and a café with a kiosk. You can store your kayak and equipment next to your tent or camper van.

Staying with your family:
It is possible that you will arrive with your family. In this case, we ask you to register them as you register for the symposium. Don't forget to reserve meal vouchers for them too (see below). Family members who are not taking part in the program pay the regular price for overnight accommodation at the campsite, just like you.

If you would like alternative accommodation, you are of course free to organize this by yourself.

Provisions
Breakfast, lunch and dinner:
Breakfast is organized by the campsite.

For lunch and dinner you have the option of eating in our vegetarian food truck.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are not included in the price. You can reserve your meal vouchers when you register. When you arrive you can collect and pay for the meal vouchers directly on site.

Prices:
Will be announced shortly

The food truck is available to us from Thursday evening to Sunday lunchtime. Of course you are also free to cater for yourself.

Drinks
Water is freely available during meals. Soft drinks and alcohol are available at the campsite kiosk.
Arrival, Parking & Logistics
Car:
Murg can be reached by car via the A3. The number of car parking spaces at the campsite is limited! If the campsite parking lot is full, there is another parking lot a few minutes' walk from the campsite. You can first drive to the campsite and unload, where you will receive further information on where to park.

We try to organize shared rides and connect you so that you can arrive and depart together. If you have a free space on the roof of your car for another kayak, you can note this on the registration form. The same applies if you are looking for a ride.

Unlike for cars, there is enough space on the campsite for camper vans.

Public transport:
The Murg campsite can be reached in just a few minutes from Murg train station, which is why it is best to travel by public transport. You can rent a kayak from us (see below).

Airplane:
From Zurich Airport there are several train connections per hour to Murg throughout the day. The journey takes, depending on the connection, about 1.5 hours.
Registration upon arrival at the symposium
Registration:
In addition to registering at the campsite, everyone must also register at the symposium reception desk upon arrival.

Kayak and equipment check:
When registering, you must confirm with your signature that you have followed the anti-quagga measures below.
Kayak & Equipment
Rent a kayak & paddle:
You have the option of renting a kayak and a Greenland paddle from us. The cost for the three days is 120 CHF. Don't forget to state this in advance when you register. The rental costs will then be included on your invoice.

Personal equipment:
Water temperatures of around 15°C are likely. It is therefore important that you come with appropriate paddling clothing: at least a neoprene long john, fleece and paddling jacket or tuilik, better a dry suit plus possibly a tuilik over it.

Please also remember to protect your head and especially your ears: ideally with ear plugs and/or a thick neoprene hood.

Life jacket:
We recommend a life jacket (PFD). However, there is no obligation to wear one.
Stopp Quagga!
Lake Walen is considered to be one of the last lakes in Switzerland that has not yet been infected by the invasive quagga mussel. Once in the lake, this mussel spreads at almost viral speed, destroying entire ecosystems and critical infrastructure, such as drinking water pipes. All it takes to contaminate a body of water is a little water or mud containing the mussel's larvae. It is up to us to prevent this catastrophe and do everything we can to protect Lake Walen. Therefore, the following rules apply to participating in the symposium with your own boat:

  • Remove visible plant material such as mud and residual water at the source water.
  • Then clean your kayak thoroughly with fresh water. Ideally with a high-pressure cleaner and water with a temperature of over 45 degrees. Make sure that the dirty water does not get into other waters.
  • Then dry your equipment and your kayak for at least four days.

You must confirm with your signature upon arrival that you have completed the steps described above.
Registration, number of participants, deadline
Registration:
Registration for the symposium is possible via the website. The number of places is limited to 60.

Anyone over 16 years of age can take part. Travelers who are not attending the symposium themselves must register using the official registration form.
Further information
Electricity:
Please note that we have different sockets in Switzerland than in other European countries. Two-pin plugs from abroad (e.g. Germany) usually work, but for Schuko or other plugs (UK etc.) you need an adapter, which is best obtained in advance.

Vignette requirement for Swiss motorways (toll)
Please do not forget to buy a vignette for the Swiss motorways before crossing the border into Switzerland. These are available as stickers (e.g. at customs and at border service stations) and online for 40 CHF. They are valid for a whole year.

Roaming charges Switzerland:
Please note that Switzerland is not included in the cheap EU roaming models of many foreign providers. Please check your subscription before your trip and, if necessary, buy a suitable data package for Switzerland. Otherwise, turn off your mobile data as soon as you approach the Swiss border, otherwise you will be charged very quickly, even if your phone is just updating in the background. You will then have free WiFi at the campsite.

Kayak trolley:
Everything on the campsite and symposium grounds is can be reached within walking distance. The launching points are also right next to the campsite. It might still be a good idea to bring a kayak trolley with you.

Country flag:
Would you like to bring your country's flag? We will hang it next to ours.

Cost

Regular: 500 CHF*
Social: 300 CHF*
Solidarity: 600 CHF*

*You decide what price you pay:

The regular price for attending the symposium is 500 CHF. We have made our calculations for the event based on the assumption that most people will pay this price.

For low earners or people who come from countries where people earn significantly less than in Switzerland, Austria or Germany, for example, we offer the option of choosing the social tariff.

You are doing well financially and would like to support the symposium or enable someone to attend who may be having a bit more trouble at the moment or who comes from a country where people earn much less than in yours? Then we would be happy if you chose the solidarity price.
